Henry A. Achampong, M.D., M.S.

Dr. Henry Achampong completed his undergraduate training at the Kentucky State University in Frankfort, KY. He graduated summa cum laude with a major in Biology and a minor in chemistry. He then went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Pharmacology at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY, successfully defending his thesis on the role of B-amyloid in neuroapoptosis. Through his research, pharmaceutical companies have been able to isolate new drug targets for treating neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

Dr. Achampong went on to study medicine at The University of Louisville School of Medicine in 2005. His passion for research continued even through medical school allowing him the unique opportunity to work with Dr. Suzanne T Ildstad (Director of the Institute of Cellular Therapeutics and CEO of Regenerex) in the characterization of facilitating cells, a “special” group of cells that have been determined to be extremely important in successful organ transplantation.

After graduating from medical school, Dr. Achampong trained in anesthesiology at The Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, in Newark, NJ. He remained actively engaged in research in both anesthesiology and pain management. He completed his interventional pain management fellowship at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Cincinnati, OH in 2009, one of the oldest and most reputable academic pain management programs in the country.

After training, Dr Achampong briefly spent time as Director of Pain Management at the Mount Nittany Pain Management Clinic, State College, PA and then as a Pain Management Physician and Anesthesiologist at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford, DE, Sussex Pain Relief Center Georgetown, DE, Fairwood Spine and Pain Center before founding Maryland Pain and Wellness Center.

Dr. Achampong is an active member of the American Society of Anesthesiology, American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, The Spine Intervention Society, North American Neuromodulation Society, and the American Pain Society.

Dr. Achampong treats a variety of chronic and acute pain disorders. His focus includes cancer pain, complex regional pain syndrome, and disorders of the spine. He is an expert in both pharmacological and interventional treatment of pain disorders. He is well trained in all interventional pain modalities, including, epidural injections, facet injections, radiofrequency techniques, discography, spinal cord stimulators, intrathecal infusion pumps, vertebroplasty and mild procedure (minimally invasive lumbar decompression).

He is a soccer enthusiast, enjoys running, ping pong, tennis and traveling.
